I grew up in a little logging town in northern British Columbia. After moving to Japan in my early twenties seeking adventure (and saké), I spent time working as barista, farmhand, hostel attendant, ESL English teacher and Japanese children’s television host and even started my own business as a Japanese-to-English translator for the tourism, education, arts and medical industries.
Then one day I realized I had a tremendous passion for mathematics, programming and solving complex logic puzzles. That was when I moved back to Canada and re-trained in public accounting. Since then, I have worked for the Big Four accounting firms and industry accounting as well as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in both the audit and appeals divisions.
The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is Canada's foremost accounting designation. Think of the CPA as a safety engineer keeping the building stable and solid—our job is to make sure financial information is accurate, precise, timely, and relevant. We also audit financial information and systems to keep them reliable, consult with business on everything from budgets to asset management, and help navigate the choppy waters of Canadian and international tax.
I most often get clients who are extremely anxious in their dealings with the CRA: audits and reviews are sudden, the tax system is complex, and any call to or from the CRA is a stressful, fraught experience. A lot of the time, CRA decisions or guidance seem arbitrary. My job is to remove some of the fear and confusion out of the process. With patience and compassion, I help people understand tax law and how the agency comes to its decisions. Most of all, I guide clients in finding the best steps they can take.
For me, accounting is about more than just numbers and spreadsheets. I love working with people, whether in supporting their personal finances, solving complex problems, or helping businesses flourish. The relief you see on someone’s face when they’re finally caught up on their fillings or successfully conclude a CRA review is priceless.
